Contribution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Uganda’s Education: Flow of Hope.

Education is a universal right of a child, and the child should not be deprived of it. I’m Emmanuel Katto popularly known as Emmanuel Katto Uganda or Emka Emmanuel Katto, a Ugandan journalist. I used to cover trends in technology, stories and bulletins, and the latest happenings in Uganda. As you can see there is a sudden buzz of Artificial Intelligence (AI) around the world. People are talking about ChatGPT, Bard AI, and many more. Today, through this article I will let you understand the possible impact of this technology on the education system of Uganda.

Understanding the background-

It is always good to know the reason behind a cause. Although things are improving with time, there are certain reasons which act as a barrier in the education system of Uganda. Reasons such as- Higher proportion of teacher and student absenteeism, weak level of school-level management structures, inadequate availability of learning resources, and the large size of classes. These are just a few reasons, but the list is pretty big. The distance to the schools and higher dropout rates also impacts education in Uganda. Generally, around 1 in 10 students do not report back to school in Uganda.

How AI can make a difference-

Technology has made the world a global village, things are changing at a rapid phase, and life is different now than it was before. Looking at the ongoing trends and talk of the expert, AI is rapidly maximizing the business and industrial outputs. This technology also seems promising in transforming the educational sector. Let’s ponder the following contribution of AI in Uganda's education system:

  • The quality of education in Africa is often limited, but AI has the potential to revolutionize learning and make it accessible to everyone.

  • AI chatbots can provide students with personalized tutoring and support, delivering personalized learning experiences as per the need of the students.

  • This technology can also be used in increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of education. Eg. By automating tasks such as grading papers and creating lesson plans and reducing the workload of teachers.

  • AI can also be used to provide content or educational resources to the students in their native or local languages, this will help in closing the language gap making education more accessible to students who speak minority languages.

  • This technology also facilitates students living in remote areas by providing education in a digital way. This will keep the students updated with her curriculum.

Conclusion-

Thus, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has tremendous potential in transforming the education system of Uganda and Africa as a whole. Many start-ups are working in African countries regarding education. Mtabe is an ed-tech startup that uses AI to provide personalized learning to students in Tanzania. It uses AI to analyze each student’s learning style and progress and then generates personalized learning content that is tailored to each student’s individual needs. This will enhance the knowledge of the student and keep him or her on track with regard to the curriculum.
